These maneuvers have significantly heightened risks to Saudi oil exports and critical maritime shipping lanes, prompting Riyadh to seek Beijing’s behind-the-scenes assistance to mitigate the threat.
While Beijing has publicly advocated for restraint, dialogue, and the restoration of safe navigation, its private communications with Tehran reportedly went substantially further than these official statements. The sources indicated that China is deeply motivated to prevent the conflict from spilling over into vital energy corridors upon which the world’s second-largest economy heavily depends.
The Iranian sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not specify the exact channel of delivery or whether the message was formally raised during Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s recent visit to Beijing. However, they noted that Tehran’s response conditioned regional stability and peace on the cessation of what it described as the "US-Israeli war on Iran."
Notably, the sources emphasized that Chinese officials stopped short of issuing explicit threats or suggesting that Beijing would wield economic pressure against Tehran should it fail to curb Ansarallah’s actions.
In response to a formal request for comment from Reuters, China’s Foreign Ministry reiterated its official stance: "China does not wish to see regional tensions further spill over into Yemen and the Red Sea. Escalating regional instability is not in the interests of any party."
The ministry further emphasized that "the sovereignty and security of all countries should be respected, and facilities vital to people's livelihoods must not be targeted," urging the resolution of issues through dialogue and negotiation.
The report underscores China’s unique and complex diplomatic position in the Middle East. As Iran’s largest trading partner and the primary buyer of its oil, Beijing possesses significant economic leverage. Furthermore, China successfully brokered the historic 2023 rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, demonstrating its capacity to mediate regional disputes.
However, analysts note that Beijing’s influence has inherent limits. Tehran must balance its economic reliance on China against its broader strategic, political, and ideological commitments within the "Axis of Resistance." The key test for Chinese diplomacy, observers note, will be whether Beijing is prepared to attach tangible consequences to its demands, or if its appeals remain purely advisory.
In related news, Saudi Arabia has offered Ansarallah a two-week ceasefire followed by direct negotiations, with Riyadh reportedly prepared to discuss humanitarian demands and pursue a comprehensive settlement, Al-Akhbar reported.
The proposal was conveyed through Omani mediation following contacts involving Saudi Arabia, the US, Egypt, Pakistan, and Oman.
Ansarallah has reportedly shown little enthusiasm for the proposal, instead demanding a comprehensive settlement that lifts the air, land, and sea blockade on Yemen and includes the withdrawal of Saudi military, security, and political forces from the country.
Riyadh has also expressed readiness to lift the blockade and allow humanitarian aid into Yemen, according to the report.
